EL SUBJUNTIVO Y SU FORMACIÓN

To form the present subjunctive, drop the -o ending of the “yo” form of the present indicative and add the following endings:

 

	CANTAR	COMER	VIVIR
yo	cante	coma	viva
tú	cantes	comas	vivas
él/ella/Ud.	cante	coma	viva
nosotros/as	cantemos	comamos	vivamos
vosotros/as	cantéis	comáis	viváis
ellos/ellas/Uds.	canten	coman	vivan

Verbs with steam changes in the present indicative carry the same steam changes to the present subjunctive:

EXPRESSIONS WHICH ENFORCE THE USE OF SUBJUNCTIVE

 

The subjunctive is a tense that is very frequently used in Spanish. It is used to express an attitude or feeling towards the action of the main verb:

·         doubt / possibility

·         uncertainty

·         disbelief

·         hope / wish

·         fear

·         advice & warn

·         commands and exhortations!

·         etc.

The following verbs and expressions require that the verb which follows is put in the subjunctive tense..

 

EXPRESSION	SUBJUNTIVE		ENGLISH
dudo que	venga	esta tarde	I doubt he will come this afternoon
es dudoso que	lo sepa		it’s doubtful whether s/he knows it
temo que	haga	lo que dice	I fear he will do what he says
no es cierto que	sean	nuestros socios	It’s is not true they are our associates/partners
no creo que    *	publique	su libro	I don’t believe s/he will publish her/his book
no pienso que *	ganen	las elecciones	I don’t think they will win the election
es increíble que	haya hecho	todo hoy	It’s unbelievable he has done everything today
es posible que es imposible que	(no) quiera	hacerlo	It’s possible s/he wants (does not want) to do it
es probable que es improbable que	lleguen sepan	hoy lo que pasó	It is probable they will arrive today It is unlikely they know what happened
puede ser que puede que	vayamos	en verano	It may be that we go in the Summer
quizá	haga	un doctorado	perhaps I’ll do a PhD
probablemente posiblemente	acabe por	hacerlo	I’ll probably end up doing it
ojalá	haga	buen tiempo	I hope (Iwish) the weather is good
te aconsejo que	hagas	más ejercicio	I advise you to exercise more
siento que	no puedas	venir a mi fiesta	I’m sorry you can not come to my party
(no) quiero que	me digas	la verdad	I (don’t) want you to tell me the truth
¡Que se (te) divierta(s) ¡Que disfrute(s)!			Enjoy yourself!
¡No lo hagas!			Don’t do it!

 

Please note that “pienso que” and “creo que” in the affirmative form are followed by the verb in indicative. For instance:

“pienso que tienes razón” / “creo que tienes razón”.

BUT

“no pienso que tengas razón” / “no creo que tengas razón”

así que en cuanto tan pronto como	termines	nos vamos	as soon as you finish we leave

antes de que	venga	debemos hacerlo	before s/he arrives we ought to do it
con tal de que	sea	correcto	provided that it is correct
a condición de que	traigas	el postre	on condition that you bring the pudding
a no ser que a menos que	no puedas	verlo	unless you can see it
sin que	digas	nada	without you saying anything
aunque	lo repitas	no lo entenderá	even if you repeat it s/he will not understand it
